Hardy Mum Care Sheet

Plant in a full to part sun location. Dig the hole 1 1/2 times larger than the root mass. Mix Master Nursery Black Forest soil amendment with the soil removed and compact around the root. After planting sprinkle Master Start fertilizer around the outside of the hole. Mums can bloom up until the first hard freeze, usually sometime in November. After blooming cut them back hard, with a scissor type pruning shear, to about six inches. Do not cut them back past the point where the main branching begins. If you have different varieties you’ll notice that trimming can be different for each variety. Now put them to bed for the winter, tuck them in with a 4 inch mound of mulch around the roots being careful not to bury the plant!

In late March or early April check the plants so they are not covered over with mulch or leaves. Once they begin to grow keep them fed with Master Nursery Bud & Bloom(water soluble) and Espoma Plant-tone. Allow them to grow until July then cut them back one third. This is called pinching but it can feel more like butchering. Don’t worry, pinching helps maintain a mounded well branched plant. Besides you’ll need to do it again in late July/early August, get used to it. pinch off a third of the new growth from the last pinch. Now continue to feed and water them and they’ll soon be full of flowers.

Once finished blooming your mums will not flower again until next fall, and you may not want to wait a whole year for them to bloom again. It’s OK to transplant them to a less conspicuous spot and move them back when they’re ready to flower.
